May 22, 2022 marks the 12th anniversary of Laszlo Hanyecz’s now-famous purchase of two large Papa John’s pizzas for about $25 worth of Bitcoin at the time.
That 10,000 BTC transaction would now be worth well over $300M.
What it did do, however, was mark the first known real-world transaction involving Bitcoin as the currency. While Laszlo’s purchase may seem frivolous today, it was actually a groundbreaking moment in the history of Bitcoin. Laszlo’s pizza purchase showed that Bitcoin could be used to buy real-world goods and services. This paved the way forward for legitimacy for cryptocurrency (and one day the SEC may come to realize that legitimacy).
May 22, then, has since become known to the crypto community as Bitcoin Pizza Day.

Set your calendars for May 22nd, 6pm Central Time (7pm EST, 11pm UTC, 11am NZST the next day) as the teams behind Rare Pizzas and imnotArt run a three-hour event in Voxels to celebrate.
The event will feature DJ Earn Money spinning tunes. imnotArt is building a replica of the Skydeck in Voxels, which is where their party will take place!
From there you can teleport back and forth between their event and The PizzaDAO gallery in Voxels. Two events simultaneously, celebrating a monumental day in Bitcoin history.

Outside of Voxels, a real-life event will take place on the Willis Tower Skydeck in Chicago, the third tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. For the brave at heart, a step into The Ledge’s glass boxes is not to be mixed.

Why are we so proud to be supporting this event? The PizzaDAO has the aim of “building global consensus… [centering] around things we all share on Earth: the internet, the blockchain, the metaverse, and pizza!”
